What to do if your Bank Account gets hacked in Bangladesh

Experiencing a hacked bank account can be a distressing situation, causing financial loss and potential security concerns. If you find yourself in such a situation in Bangladesh, it’s crucial to take immediate action to mitigate the damage and safeguard your financial assets. Here are steps to follow if your bank account gets hacked in Bangladesh;

Contact Your Bank Immediately

As soon as you notice any unauthorized transactions or suspicious activities in your bank account, contact your bank’s customer service or visit your nearest branch. Inform them about the unauthorized access to your account and provide details of the transactions or incidents that occurred.

Freeze Your Account

Request your bank to freeze your account temporarily to prevent further unauthorized transactions and any unlawful attempt to conduct any transaction so that no unlawful activities can be operated without the knowledge of the account holder. This action helps prevent additional losses while the bank investigates the situation and restores security measures.

Change Your Passwords and PIN(s)

If your online banking credentials or ATM PIN have been compromised, change them immediately. Create strong, unique passwords and PINs that are not easily guessable and ensure they are not shared with anyone else.

File a Police Report

Report the incident to the local police station and file a formal complaint and/or G.D or FIR (First Information Report). Provide details of the unauthorized access, including any evidence you have, such as transaction records or communications related to the hacking.

Notify Relevant Authorities

In Bangladesh, you can also report cybercrimes to the Bangladesh Cyber Security and Incident Response Team (BD-CSIRT) under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). They can provide assistance and guidance on dealing with cybercrimes.

Cooperate with the Bank’s Investigation

Work closely with your bank’s fraud investigation team to provide any necessary information or documentation they require to resolve the issue. Keep records of all communications and transactions related to the hacking incident.

Monitor Your Account Regularly

After securing your account, continue to monitor your bank statements, transaction history, and online banking activity regularly for any unusual or unauthorized transactions. Report any suspicious activities to your bank immediately.

Consider Enhancing Security Measures

Take proactive steps to enhance the security of your bank account and personal information. This may include enabling two-factor authentication for online banking, installing security software on your devices, and being cautious of phishing attempts or suspicious emails.

Seek Legal Advice if Necessary

If the hacking incident results in significant financial loss or damages, consider seeking legal advice from a qualified attorney who specializes in cybercrime or banking law. They can provide guidance on your rights and options for seeking compensation or legal recourse.

Educate Yourself and Stay Informed

Stay informed about cyber security best practices and emerging threats to protect yourself from future hacking incidents. Educate yourself about common scams, phishing techniques, and ways to safeguard your personal and financial information online.

By taking prompt and decisive action in response to a hacked bank account, you can minimize the impact of the incident and work towards restoring the security of your financial assets in Bangladesh. Remember to stay vigilant, keep your bank informed, and prioritize the protection of your personal and financial information at all times.
